Parvati Prasad Baruva

Parvati Prasad Baruva (born 19 August 1904 in Sivasagar district, died 7 June 1964) is remembered as the Geetikavi, the lyrical poet of Assam. He was a poet, songwriter, dramatist and one of the early filmmakers of Assamese cinema.

He studied philosophy at Scottish Church College in Kolkata, where watching plays and dance dramas based on Tagore's work shaped his later music. By profession he was a tea planter. He edited handwritten magazines from his student days and founded the Jonaki Mel literary gathering, which later became a branch of the Assam Sahitya Sabha. In 1961 he presided over the music session of the Sahitya Sabha at Goalpara.

In cinema he directed Rupahi, the fourth Assamese feature film, and composed its music; he is also said to have acted in it. His poetry and song collections include Bhonga Tukarir Sur, Gungunani and Luiti, and he wrote the dance dramas Lakhimi and Sonar Soleng. English translations of his poems were honoured with a Sahitya Akademi translation award in 2007.
