Asit Sen

Asit Sen was a film director, cinematographer and screenwriter who worked in Assamese, Bengali and Hindi cinema, directing 17 feature films in all. Born in Dhaka, he spent part of his youth in Nagaon, Assam, where he completed school before moving to Kolkata. There he took up photography and, with the help of his uncle, the cinematographer Ramananda Sengupta, entered the film industry.

His first work was a documentary on Mahatma Gandhi's tours in Noakhali and Patna. His debut as a feature director was the Assamese film Biplabi, which makes him an early name in the history of Assamese cinema, and Biplobi is the entry we list for him here. His later career was in Bengali and Hindi: Deep Jweley Jai, Uttar Falguni, Mamta, Khamoshi and Safar are among his best known films. He won the Filmfare Award for Best Director for Safar.

From 1993 he taught at the National Institute of Film and Fine Arts and continued until his death in Kolkata on 25 August 2001.
